North Carolina camping is exciting year round including in December. If you have been thinking about camping near the Nantahala River in December you are in for a treat. Even though the leaves are no longer on the trees there are still some amazing views and plenty of outdoors opportunities. The mountain biking, hiking, fly fishing and sight seeing remain very impressive during the last month of the year.
At this point in the year the Nantahala River is running at very high levels because of the high amounts of rain the region has received. If you want to be adventurous then throw on a wetsuit and take a trip down the Nantahala River during the month of December. It is sure to be a fun, yet very cold, outdoor adventure. Please understand that the water temperature is around 48 degrees and it is likely the outside temperature is just as cold so prepare yourself.

that is a beautiful place for camping! Be sure to refer to a checklist before going. http://www.sightseeingreview.com/campingchecklist.php
That is about the temperature of the rivers in Washington, where I live and raft, on a normal basis. Folks around here are in wetsuits 90% of the season, or so it seems.
I rafted the Nantahala in 1990 when I was there for the Project RAFT international competition and I found it to be a very enjoyable river trip. They had us running a gate in the slalom contest right at the lip of the falls. . .
