Nantahala River Mountain Fly Fishing has been near and dear to my heart since my adolescent years. Growing up in Topton, North Carolina, fly fishing on the Nantahala River was a necessity. Fly fishing for mountain trout above the powerhouse was a weekly, sometimes daily event for me as a young adult. Mayflies, Light Cahills, Orange Stimulators and Elk Hair Caddis were terms that littered my vocabulary throughout high school. Fishing the pocket water with dry flies and watching the trout rise were some of the most enjoyable times of my life. Swinging a nymph and catching several big trout over 16 inches was also commonplace for me on the Nantahala River.
Now that I am older and have moved away from Topton, North Carolina I have learned how special Nantahala River Mountain Fly Fishing really is. In my college years I had the luxury of going back to Western North Carolina and catching some very nice fish. I will never forget the April trip that provided me 20 trout over 14 inches. It seems that every single cast they were killing my Copper John. Now, as a young professional, it is hard to find time to get back to the “Nanny,” but one thing I know for sure is that it is the best mountain fly fishing river I have fished.
For more information on places to stay and where to fish, be sure to email me at NantahalaRiverVacation@gmail.com. For the true fly fishing experince, Brookside Campground offers a camping experience that is only one mile from the river. It is the closest campground for easy access to the river. For a discount at Brookside call 1-800-848-7238 and use the promotional code JRW. Growing up in the area has helped me develop great relationships with many of the local lodging options. There are also many other options in the area such as Hiking the Appalachian Trail, Rafting the Nantahala and Cheoah Rivers and riding the Tail of the Dragon just to name a few.

Nantahala is an extremely pristine area of WNC, I grew up in the Pisgah Forest region of NC, and I love to ride out that way as often as possible for whitewater expeditions.
